Ian joined Exova in early 2011 from Compass Group plc, where he was Group Managing Director, UK & Ireland and a member of the Group’s Executive Committee. Whilst at Compass, Ian led the UK and Ireland business through a period of successful transformation and was responsible for operations with a combined turnover of £1.8 billion and circa 60,000 people.
Prior to Compass Group, Ian’s career included positions with Centrica plc and the global management consultancy Accenture. At Centrica, he held a number of senior growth-orientated roles in British Gas before leading the successful launch, growth and subsequent sale of the Group’s telecommunications division, Onetel.
Ian has a BSc in Economics and Statistics from University College London and an MBA from INSEAD.
Phil Marshall, Chief Financial Officer
Phil joined Exova in September 2015 from Wood Mackenzie, a global leader in commercial intelligence for the energy, metals and mining industries, where he was Chief Financial Officer from April 2014 until June 2015. Phil previously spent 17 years with General Electric Company where he was latterly the President and Chief Executive Officer of the European, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) Consumer and Industrial Solutions business, having also been Chief Financial Officer of this business from 2005 to 2008. Phil also brings experience of the US market having been the CFO of the Ultrasound and Clinical Systems business and has also spent time in Financial Planning and Analysis (FP&A) and corporate Finance roles with GE.
Phil holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree and is a qualified Chartered Management Accountant.
Paul Barry, Managing Director Europe
Paul joined Exova in November 2015 following six years with Bureau Veritas, where he most recently held the position of chief executive officer, North West Europe. Originally joining the company as CEO, United Kingdom and Ireland in 2009, Paul was latterly responsible for revenues of €200 million and 1,500 employees across eight countries.
With over 25 years’ experience in commercial and operational management across a number of business sectors, he has held senior roles with companies including British Gas, Transco, National Grid and Germanischer Lloyd, and was managing director of Advantica’s Middle East business. Paul brings excellent credentials in leading and growing major businesses and has a solid track record working across pan-European teams.
Gary Brimmage, President, Americas
Gary joined Exova as President of the Americas region in March 2015. He brings over 20 years of global senior leadership experience, leading successful business transformations, delivering sustained profitable growth and developing high performing teams. He has executive level experience in the Construction, Energy and Aerospace sectors.
Gary joined from Johnson Controls where most recently he was VP and Managing Director, Latin America and previously VP GM, North America with a combined responsibility for over $1bn of sales and more than 3000 personnel in 30 countries spanning North and South America. During a fourteen-year career with the company, he also held a number of other senior commercial and operational roles in highly competitive market segments. Prior to this, Gary spent sixteen years with Honeywell Inc. where he held senior roles within the Commercial Aviation, Homes and Building Control business segments.
Gary holds a BSc in Business Administration from East Carolina University and an Executive MBA in Global Electronic Commerce from Georgia State University.
Matt Davies, Managing Director, Rest of the World
Matt joined Exova in December 2013 as Finance Director, Rest of the World Region. He was subsequently promoted to Managing Director for the Region in September 2015. Matt joined Exova from Olive Group, the international provider of security services, systems and risk management consultancy, where he was Group Chief Financial Officer. Based out of Dubai, he was instrumental in doubling the size of the business over a 3 year period. Prior to this, Matt held a number of senior commercial finance positions with global organisations, including G4S, ArmorGroup International and British Telecom during a career spanning over 17 years in finance.
Matt has a proven track record of delivering profitable business growth through effective and innovative financial planning and performance management, control processes and cost management. His experience also includes raising of finance, corporate reorganisation and M&A. Matt has a degree in French and German from Exeter University and qualified as a Chartered Accountant with PricewaterhouseCoopers in London.
Dr Roger Digby, Group Technical Director
Dr Roger Digby joined Exova in April 2011 from Airbus, where he was Head of Materials and Processes Integration for aircraft programmes, with responsibility for defining and delivering materials and processes solutions for the A350XWB family of aircraft. He also played a lead role in the provision of materials and processes support to the development of the Airbus A380, A320, A330/340, A400M and future aircraft projects. Prior to this, Roger was Chief Materials Engineer and Head of Laboratories at GKN Aerospace Services, the global engineering group. During this time he led a review and reorganisation of laboratory services, delivering improvements in quality, technical capabilities and efficiency.
Roger has a BEng (Hons) degree in Materials Science and Engineering, a PhD in Materials Science and a post-graduate diploma in Business Administration (DBA). He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (FREng), a Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (FIMMM), and a Chartered Engineer (CEng).
Manus McGonigle, Chief Information Officer
A Chartered Engineer, with a wealth of experience leading technical functions in a range of organisations, Manus is responsible for defining and delivering Exova’s global IT strategy. Manus joined Exova in November 2009 from the Royal Bank of Scotland Group where, as Head of Group Document Services, he was responsible for developing the technical architecture to deliver a complex multi-channel customer communications approach, including handling 300+ million items of mail every year from 63 locations.
Manus began his career with Hewlett Packard before joining Motorola Inc, where he spent a number of years, initially as Engineering Manager and, ultimately, European IT Director. Manus has a first class honours degree in electronics from University College Dublin, an MSc in IT from Strathclyde University and an MBA from Napier University.
Jim McHugh, Group HR Director
Jim joined Exova in 2010 as Group HR Director having spent over twenty years in a broad range of HR roles in the electronics industry. Prior to joining Exova, Jim was Human Resource Director (Europe, Middle East and Africa) at Freescale Semiconductor Ltd, formed through an IPO following its spin-off from Motorola in 2004. With responsibility for some 4500 personnel across 15 countries, Jim played a key role in organisational change and then again when Freescale subsequently moved from public to private ownership in 2007. He also worked with Motorola Inc. for 13 years in both UK and global HR roles and was based in the US for five years.
Jim has an MA (Hons) degree from the University of Glasgow in Psychology, an MSc degree in Human Resource Management from University of Strathclyde Business School and is a Chartered Fellow of The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD).
Neil MacLennan, Group General Counsel and Company Secretary
Neil joined Exova in September 2013 and advises on corporate and commercial matters, legal risk management and corporate governance issues. His experience includes a wide range of corporate and capital markets transactions for public and private companies including advising on M&A transactions, takeovers, private equity transactions, joint ventures, compliance with company and securities laws and general corporate governance matters.
Prior to joining Exova, Neil was with corporate law firm Dickson Minto where he worked for over eight years. He also worked in the London office of Allen & Overy from 2000 to 2004 and holds an honours degree in law from the University of Edinburgh. Neil is qualified as a solicitor in Scotland and in England and Wales.
John Willox, Managing Director, Fire, Building Products and Certification
John joined Exova in August 2010, having spent over 25 years in the construction sector, including 20 years with Hilti, the global technology group where he worked both in the UK and its global headquarters in Liechtenstein.
John brings extensive knowledge and experience of business growth across diverse geographical markets, having been Market Development Director for the Americas and VP of Marketing and Operations for Hilti’s fire protection division. This experience, combined with strong international and sector knowledge, saw John appointed Fire Safety Technology (FST) Director for Exova Warringtonfire Europe, before taking on the role of Managing Director FST Global in September 2011. John was appointed Managing Director of Fire, Building Products and Certification following the acquisition in May 2015 of BM TRADA.
